Happy May

17 May

I hope that everyone is having a lovely May, so far.  You may be wondering what the heck I’ve been up to?  Well, it’s been sunny and warm here in Vancouver.  These days you’ll find me outside in sandals and sunnies, in one of the gardens, or walking Emmy.  My ombre hair is getting long and instead of blow drying and straightening it every day, I’m letting it dry naturally, and embracing my curls for the first time ever — perfect for a low-maintenance Summer.  I’ve been shopping.  Aritzia and Spank have me daydreaming about my next purchases.  P and I celebrated our third year anniversary.  We attended a sweet wedding on a farm in Langley.  We spent Mother’s day laying in the sun with my family.  I had the best, and most filling, Cobb salad I’ve ever eaten.  Emmy almost became a pirate.  Yar!   A mean kitty nearly scratched her poor little eye out.  A quick trip to the animal hospital and several antibiotic drops later and she’s doing fine.  Our backyard garden is starting bloom (I will post pictures this weekend).  Our backyard garden might just be OUR backyard garden very soon!  We have a meeting next week to discuss purchasing the townhome we are currently renting from our landlord.  This could be it!  Weee!

I can’t help but think how much more interesting this post would be if I had an iPhone…

I really have enjoyed shopping lately.  I’ve promised myself that I would buy one nice piece to add to my wardrobe each payday.  I’m loving this blouse from Aritzia.  It will be my next purchase.

Sabrina Blouse $110

This is my most favourite recent purchase:

Betsy Blouse $50

It is so cute on, I can hardly believe it.

Back soon, kittens.

Change of plot

29 Apr

My neighbour came over on Friday to tell me that he scored P and I our very OWN garden plot, but warned me that it needed a lot of work.  The woman who had the plot before us moved, and basically left everything behind (mostly a lot of junk and another compost full of crap — oh goody).

We already bought the materials needed to make an 8 x 4 raised bed in our orignal spot, but because of wet weather and the Mr being gone this weekend (stag in Whistler) we haven’t had a chance to construct it yet.  It’s good that we didn’t because now we can build it in our own garden.  No more sharesies.

Here it is!

That is rhubarb to the right.  It’s ginormous!  I split it with my neighbour, but there is still so much.  I’m going to have to cut it back, and then look for some good rhubarb recipes.  My grandma used to make strawberry and rhubarb pie; I think I’ll start with that.

Emmy was happy to get to play outside after a couple days of r & r.

I decided to start with the far left corner and work my way out.  Makes sense, right?

Here’s what I got done today.  The water bins and other miscellaneous junk belonged to the guy next door (back of the garden), so I just moved things over and made a border (with stuff I found in the garden) between the two plots.  I met him later in the afternoon.  He was really happy with what I had done so far.

I discovered a whole bunch of chives among the weeds in the middle of the garden (that I also split with my neighbour).  Actually, there seems to be a lot growing in the garden; I just don’t know what anything is yet.

Somehow I really love this strange piece of art someone left hanging on the dead tree in our garden.  It’s made up of a lot of what I’m finding laying around.  Junk.

This garden is going to keep me busy for a long time, and I couldn’t be happier.

Back soon.

Chichen Itza, Mexico

28 Apr

Chichen Itza is located in the eastern portion of Yucatán state in Mexico.

The Sacred Cenote (also know as the Sacred Well, or Well of Sacrifice).

According to post-Conquest sources, pre-Columbian Maya sacrificed objects and human beings into the cenote as a form of worship to the Maya rain god Chaac.

El Castillo, North Side

On the Spring and Autumn equinoxes, in the late afternoon, the northwest corner of the pyramid casts a series of triangular shadows against the western balustrade on the north side that evokes the appearance of a serpent wriggling down the staircase. Some have suggested the effect was an intentional design by the Maya builders to represent the feathered-serpent god Kukulcan.

El Caracol (The Observatory)

The Observatory at Chichen Itza is called el Caracol (or snail in Spanish) because it has an interior staircase that spirals upward like a snail’s shell.

Chac Masks – Masks of the Rain God

One of the characteristics seen in architecture of Chichen Itza is the presence of three-dimensional masks of what was traditionally believed to be the Maya god of rain and lightning Chacor God B. This god is one of the earliest identified Maya deities, with traces back to the beginnings of the Maya civilization (ca. 100 BC-AD 100). Variants of the rain god’s name include Chac Xib Chac and Yaxha Chac.

There are vendors a plenty at Chichen Itza.

Columns in the Temple of a Thousand Warriors

I thought I took more pictures, but this seems to be it for Chicken Pizza.

Check out the art that was hanging in our hotel room.  I’ll be honest, I found it a little creepy at the time.  I think it’s pretty neat now that I made it out alive.

Chichen Itza was our first stop on a one-month tour through Central America in 2009.  This is the trip that I learned “travelling” and “vacationing” are very different.  No laying on the beach during the first three weeks of this tour.

Lots more to come!

Manzanillo, Mexico

28 Apr

I’ve seen a couple vacation related posts recently that left me dreaming of being somewhere else.  Because the Mr and I won’t be flying off anywhere this year (saving, saving, saving), I thought it would be fun to go through and share some of my favourite photos from vacations past.

This set is from 2007 — our very first vacation together.  We spent 10 nights at the Karmina Palace in Manzanillo, Mexico.  This relaxing getaway marked the beginning of many fun-filled adventures to come.

And this begins my new Category, Travel.

Bucket head

28 Apr

My sweet sweet girl went in for emergency surgery on Thursday.  Several of her baby teeth decided that they didn’t want to come out, but her adult teeth still pushed through.  I thought the baby teeth would just fall out on their own — little did I know — those tiny chompers were stuck!

I noticed that Emmy wasn’t able to eat properly on Wednesday morning, and she had been sick the night before.  She also had the foulest breath I have ever smelled.  I called the vet when I got to work and they had us come in that afternoon.  After an examination the vet said that she needed to have surgery asap, and booked Em in for the very next morning.  P dropped her off before work.

We hurried to the clinic after work to see our little girl.  She melted into my arms and chest after being passed to me by the technician.

She had three teeth extracted, two pulled, and was spayed all at the same time.  We decided it was better for her to only be anesthetized once.  The surgery went smoothly, and she is doing really well.  She slept a lot yesterday and today.

Emmy turned 5 months on Wednesday.  She’s a big girl now.

Time sure does fly.

Back soony.

P.S. You can see more pics of Em here.
